Why oil pulling

Mints cover it up.
Oil pulling is a habit that starts clean.

Mints and alcohol mouthwash give you a few fresh minutes. Oil pulling is slower and more deliberate: a gentle 10 to 15 minute swish that moves around your teeth, gums and tongue before the day begins. Swish, spit, then brush as usual.

How it works

Pour 5ml. Swish 10 to 15 minutes. Spit and brush.

10–15

minutes

1

Pour 5ml

About a teaspoon of the oil blend into your mouth.

2

Swish 10–15 minutes

Gently, while you get ready. Start shorter if you need to and build up.

3

Spit, rinse, brush

Spit into the bin (not the sink), rinse with warm water, then brush as usual.

Optional finishing touch: a tongue scrape.

03

Oregano Essential Oil

Contains carvacrol and thymol, compounds studied for their antimicrobial activity against certain bacteria, including some associated with plaque and bad breath.

04

Tea Tree Essential Oil

Contains terpinen-4-ol, a compound studied for its antimicrobial activity against bacteria associated with plaque formation and gum inflammation.

05

Clove Essential Oil

Rich in eugenol, clove oil has traditionally been used in oral care and has demonstrated antimicrobial activity against certain oral bacteria.

06

Cinnamon Essential Oil

Contains cinnamaldehyde, a compound studied for its antibacterial activity against certain oral bacteria associated with plaque and unpleasant breath.

07

Vitamin E

A powerful antioxidant that helps protect the oils from oxidation, keeping the rinse fresh and stable throughout its shelf life.

Backed by published research · see the studies

Oil pulling is a traditional Ayurvedic practice with published clinical research behind it. In trials, people who oil pulled daily for two to four weeks showed improvements in breath, plaque and gum-health scores. Oil pulling works best alongside your normal brushing and flossing.

Questions

The answers most people look for first.

What is oil pulling, and how is it different from mouthwash?

Oil pulling is a traditional Ayurvedic practice: you swish a small amount of oil in your mouth, then spit it out. Mouthwash is usually alcohol-based and used for 30 to 60 seconds. Oil pulling is alcohol-free and slower, 10 to 15 minutes, as part of your morning.

How much do I use, and for how long?

Use 5ml (about a teaspoon) once a day and swish gently for 10 to 15 minutes. If that feels long at first, start with a few minutes and build up. Then spit it out, rinse with warm water, and brush as usual. One 250ml bottle gives you up to 50 uses.

Do I still need to brush and floss?

Yes. Oil pulling is a companion to brushing and flossing, not a replacement. Use it alongside your normal routine.

Is it safe to swallow?

No. Oil Pulling is for external use only. Spit it into the bin, not the sink, because oil can build up in pipes over time.
